Agra

The most famous Indian carpets are the ones made in Agra. Their tradition begins as early as the early 17th century and flourishes at the end of the 19th century onwards, mainly because of their popularity in the British Isles, when India belonged to the British Empire. Agra carpets almost always bear repetitive motifs, most popularly “shrub” motifs, which cover the whole ground, surrounded by one fairly narrow main border. The present Agra is one of majestic size with two types of flower blossoms, densely covering the whole ground. Most important of all features stands out the magnificent and extremely rare sea-green ground, surrounded by a bright golden border. Almost certainly a commissioned carpet, circa 1900
