Armenian Tree Kilim

This extremely unusual kilim was made in Armenia in S. Caucasus and cannot be considered a typical Azerbaijani kilim. It is definitely a playful improvisation of the mother for her children’s delight. Like many Armenian carpets and kilims, this one is dated not only with year (1920) but also with day and month (1 July). It is covered with trees, birds, hens, small houses and “elibelinde” motifs which symbolize fertility and prosperity. A most interesting acquisition.
